Pinckney D. Bowles autographed handwritten two-page letter signed (ALS), dated June 24, 1892, on the printed letterhead of Bowles & Rabb, Lawyers & Real Estate Agents, Evergreen, Conecuh County, Alabama. Written on both sides of a single folded 6 x 9.5" sheet and addressed to John H. Blackwood, the letter responds to an inquiry and provides recommendations for several attorneys and legal contacts throughout Alabama, including individuals in Mobile, Opelika, Montgomery, Selma, Anniston, Huntsville, and Birmingham. Bowles concludes by expressing hope that the information will prove satisfactory and signs the letter at the close.
The letter offers an interesting glimpse into the professional network of Alabama attorneys during the late nineteenth century and reflects the importance of personal recommendations in legal practice before the widespread use of professional directories.
Very good condition overall with expected horizontal and vertical mailing folds, light age toning, and minor handling wear. Ink remains dark and fully legible throughout.
