Details:
Edmund Randolph and John Harvie autographed manuscript document signed (DS), dated October 3, 1787, an official Commonwealth of Virginia land grant issued during Randolph's tenure as Governor of Virginia.
The partly printed vellum document grants approximately 1,136 acres of land in Harrison County, Virginia (present-day West Virginia), situated along the waters of the Middle Fork of the Tygart Valley River. The grant includes a detailed handwritten description of the property's boundaries and references an earlier survey conducted in November 1786.
Signed "Edm. Randolph" at the conclusion as Governor of Virginia, with an additional handwritten certification on the reverse signed by John Harvie in his capacity as Register of the Virginia Land Office.
An interesting early American land document bearing the signatures of two prominent Revolutionary-era Virginia statesmen, issued in the same year that Randolph participated in the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.
The vellum document measures approximately 14 x 13 inches. Very good condition with original folds, considerable age toning and staining, scattered soiling, edge wear, and minor separations. The original seal remains affixed with reinforcement.
Edmund Randolph (1753–1813) was an American Founding Father who served as Governor of Virginia from 1786 to 1788. A delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, he was subsequently appointed the first United States Attorney General by President George Washington in 1789 and later served as Secretary of State.
John Harvie (1742–1807) was a Virginia Revolutionary War patriot, Founding Father, and delegate to the Continental Congress. He served as Register of the Virginia Land Office and played an important role in the administration of western land claims during the early years of American independence.
