Details:
John Bird and Abner Kuykendall autographed early Texas mercantile receipt dated September 3, 1833, during the Mexican Texas period and less than three years before the Texas Revolution. The handwritten account records goods purchased by Abner Kuykendall, with quantities and prices totaling $6.15, and is autographed at the conclusion by John Bird. The reverse bears an additional autograph of Jacob H. Shepperd. An exceptional document connecting several figures associated with the settlement and early military history of Texas.
The document measures approximately 7.75 x 2.75". Good to fine condition with expected age toning, scattered foxing and staining, a small area of paper loss, original folds, irregular edges, and general handling wear.
Abner Kuykendall (1777–1834) was an early Texas pioneer and member of Stephen F. Austin's celebrated "Old Three Hundred," the original families and settlers who received land grants in Austin's first colony in Mexican Texas. Kuykendall became an important figure in the colony's early defense and served as captain of one of its first militia companies, helping provide protection for the developing settlements during the frontier period.
John Bird (1795–1839) was an early Texas settler, soldier, and frontier militia officer associated with Austin's Old Three Hundred. A veteran of the War of 1812, Bird later served the Republic of Texas as a Ranger captain. He was killed in 1839 while commanding a company of Texas Rangers in a fight with Native American warriors near present-day Temple, Texas, an engagement subsequently remembered as the Battle of Bird's Creek.
Jacob H. Shepperd was an early Texas settler and participant in the Texas Revolution. He is particularly associated with the opening phase of the conflict and is remembered for carrying an important dispatch concerning the developing crisis at San Antonio de Béxar and the Alamo. His autograph appears on the reverse of this document, adding another direct connection to the generation of settlers who participated in the struggle for Texas independence.
