Very good condition with overall age toning, original folds, scattered staining and handling wear, irregularly trimmed edges, and small losses along the margins.
Captain John Postlethwait was a Revolutionary War officer, businessman, and prominent early resident of Lexington, Kentucky. In 1797 he established Postlethwait's Tavern, a log tavern and inn situated between Water and Main Streets along Town Branch Creek. The establishment became an important center of Lexington social life, serving travelers and local residents while also becoming closely associated with the region's early horse racing and gambling culture. Postlethwait was active in Kentucky's developing racing industry and was among the men involved in establishing the Kentucky Association for the Improvement of Breeds of Stock. After the tavern burned in 1820, the site was rebuilt as the Phoenix Hotel, which itself became a longtime Lexington landmark.
