William Sprague IV (1830–1915) was an American industrialist, politician, and Civil War-era governor of Rhode Island. A member of the wealthy Sprague textile manufacturing family, he served as Governor of Rhode Island from 1860 to 1863 and became known as the "Boy Governor" for his youth. An ardent supporter of the Union, Sprague accompanied Rhode Island troops into the field during the early stages of the Civil War and participated in the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861. He subsequently served as a United States Senator from Rhode Island from 1863 to 1875. Sprague was also married to Kate Chase, daughter of Treasury Secretary and Supreme Court Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, making the couple prominent figures in Washington society during the Lincoln administration.
