Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888) was a United States Army officer whose aggressive leadership made him one of the Union's most successful commanders during the Civil War. Rising to the rank of major general, he played a decisive role in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864 and commanded the cavalry during the Appomattox Campaign, helping to cut off Confederate General Robert E. Lee's retreat before the surrender at Appomattox Court House. Sheridan remained in the Army after the war, serving as Commanding General of the United States Army from 1883 until his death in 1888.
