Details:
William Howard Taft autographed typed letter (TLS), dated October 4, 1913, on personal letterhead reading "William H. Taft, New Haven, Conn." Addressed to Reverend John Wesley Hill of New York City, the letter concerns arrangements for a meeting with a sculptor. Signed "Wm. H. Taft" in bold black ink at the conclusion.
Taft writes, in full:
"I have yours of October 3rd. I shall be out of town next week, except Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and Monday and Tuesday I have lectures. If the sculptor could come up here next Wednesday, I would be glad to see him in the morning."
Written just seven months after Taft left the presidency in March 1913, the letter dates to his tenure as Kent Professor of Law and Legal History at Yale University, where he resumed his academic and professional activities following his defeat in the presidential election of 1912.
The recipient, Reverend John Wesley Hill (1863–1936), was a prominent Methodist minister, lecturer, and public speaker who became associated with patriotic organizations and political causes during the early 20th century.
An interesting example of personal correspondence from the only individual in American history to serve as both President of the United States and Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
The letter measures approximately 6.75 x 9.25 inches. Very good condition with light age toning, scattered handling wear, and noticeable staining along the left margin. Taft's signature remains bold and clearly legible.
William Howard Taft (1857–1930) was the 27th President of the United States, serving from 1909 to 1913, and the 10th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, serving from 1921 to 1930. Before his presidency, Taft served as Governor-General of the Philippines and Secretary of War under President Theodore Roosevelt. Following his presidency, he taught law at Yale University until President Warren G. Harding appointed him Chief Justice in 1921. Taft remains the only American to have held both of the nation's highest executive and judicial offices.
