Details:
Flying Tigers veterans Dick Rossi, Bruce Holloway, David "Tex" Hill, Chuck Older, Charles Bond, Ken Jernstedt, and Joe Rosbert, together with World War II fighter ace Robert L. Scott Jr., autographed an ArtCraft Great Americans Series cover honoring Claire L. Chennault and the Flying Tigers. The eight aviators have signed across the front, with several adding squadron, unit, and Flying Tigers notations.
Among the inscriptions, Hill identifies himself with the 2nd Squadron AVG, Holloway with the 3rd Squadron AVG, Rossi with the 1st Squadron AVG, Older with the 3rd Squadron AVG and later 23rd Fighter Group, Bond with the 1st Pursuit Squadron AVG, Rosbert with the AVG 1st Squadron, and Scott references the 23rd Fighter Group and China in 1942. The illustrated cachet depicts Chennault with a shark-mouthed P-40 and is captioned "Claire L. Chennault, Commanding General of The Flying Tigers," from ArtCraft's 1990 Great Americans Series.
Fine condition.
The American Volunteer Group, better known as the Flying Tigers, was organized under Claire L. Chennault and fought Japanese forces in China and Burma in 1941–1942. Its pilots became famous for their shark-mouthed P-40 fighters and combat record. Dick Rossi (1915–2008), Bruce Holloway (1912–1999), David "Tex" Hill (1915–2007), Chuck Older (1917–2006), Charles Bond (1914–1989), Ken Jernstedt (1917–2013), and Joe Rosbert (1914–2004) served with the AVG. Robert L. Scott Jr. (1908–2006), although not an AVG member, became a noted fighter ace in China and commanded the 23rd Fighter Group, which carried forward the Flying Tigers' combat legacy after the AVG was disbanded.
