Details:
Colonial and Revolutionary-era Philadelphia collection of 18 clipped autographs from prominent political, legal, military, religious, scientific, and civic figures, individually mounted to two 5.5 x 9.5" album sheets, with one sheet bearing signatures on both sides. One side retains a period manuscript label reading, "Autographs of Philadelphians before & during the Revolution."
The collection includes Jared Ingersoll, delegate to the Continental Congress and signer of the United States Constitution; Charles Pettit, delegate to the Confederation Congress and Revolutionary War staff officer; James Hutchinson, Revolutionary-era physician and a founder of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia; Edward Shippen IV, Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and father-in-law of Benedict Arnold; Andrew Hamilton, prominent colonial attorney and Pennsylvania attorney general; William Coleman, Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice and founder and trustee of the institution that became the University of Pennsylvania; Benjamin Chew, Chief Justice of Pennsylvania and provincial attorney general; Tench Francis, Pennsylvania attorney general and founding trustee of the College of Philadelphia; Alexander Wilcocks, Philadelphia attorney and Revolutionary patriot; Thomas Hopkinson, first president of the American Philosophical Society and collaborator with Benjamin Franklin in early electrical experiments; Andrew Allen, provincial attorney general and delegate to the Continental Congress; Daniel Roberdeau, Continental Congressman, Revolutionary War brigadier general, and signer of the Articles of Confederation; William White, Bishop of Pennsylvania and an early Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church; Jonathan Dickinson Sergeant, Continental Congressman and Attorney General of Pennsylvania; John Coxe, Philadelphia judge and brother of Tench Coxe; William Rawle, prominent Philadelphia attorney, abolitionist, U.S. District Attorney for Pennsylvania, and a founder of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; John Nixon, Revolutionary War militia officer who gave the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia; and Richard Peters, Jun. (Note: the signature is actually that of Richard Peters Sr., a Continental Congressman, Sec. Continental Board of War, and Judge. The “jun” suggests that it was taken from a letter addressed to his son.
The assemblage brings together figures whose careers encompassed colonial Pennsylvania, the American Revolution, the Continental and Confederation Congresses, the framing of the Constitution, Philadelphia's early scientific and educational institutions, and the development of the new nation's legal and religious institutions.
Fine condition overall with expected toning and handling wear. The signatures are clipped and mounted as assembled. Close cropping affects one letter of James Hutchinson's signature and portions of the John Coxe signature.
