Details:
James F. Byrnes autographed typed letter (TLS), dated February 12, 1955, on his personal stationery bearing the heading "James F. Byrnes, Heathwood Circle, Columbia, S.C." Addressed to Harold Leonard Krevolin III of New Haven, Connecticut, and signed "James F. Byrnes" in blue ink.
Written less than a month after completing his term as Governor of South Carolina, the letter responds to an autograph collector's request for a signed photograph.
Byrnes writes, in part:
"I have no recollection of having received your previous letter. However, my term of office as Governor expired January 18 and much of my mail since that date has gone to various addresses."
He continues by providing his temporary mailing address at the Columbia Hotel and graciously offers to autograph the recipient's photograph:
"If you care to send the photograph to me at that address, I shall be glad to sign it."
An interesting piece of correspondence from one of the most versatile figures in 20th-century American government. Byrnes held prominent positions in all three branches of the federal government before returning to South Carolina to serve as governor.
Fine condition. The letter bears a Beckett Authentication Services authentication sticker on the verso, numbered BA74706.
