Ralph Pomeroy autographed Connecticut financial certificate dated May 9, 1791, issued from the Comptroller's Office. The partially printed document certifies that John James Davenport was entitled to receive five pounds from funds appropriated for the payment of interest on the liquidated debt of the State of Connecticut. Pomeroy has prominently autographed the certificate in his capacity as Comptroller. The document was printed at Hartford by Hudson and Goodwin and features an elaborate decorative border.
The document measures approximately 6.5 x 4". Fine condition with expected light age toning, a circular cancellation cut through the center, and minor edge and handling wear.
Ralph Pomeroy (1737–1819) was a Connecticut public official and Revolutionary War-era military administrator who served as Deputy Quartermaster General of the Continental Army. Working within the Continental Army's critical supply system, Pomeroy was responsible for helping obtain and distribute provisions and matériel to American forces during the struggle for independence. Following the Revolution, he continued in public service and became Comptroller of Connecticut, overseeing state financial affairs and the settlement of Revolutionary-era obligations. Documents such as this 1791 certificate reflect the continuing financial consequences of the Revolution as Connecticut worked to satisfy debts incurred during the war.
