Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886) was a career United States Army officer who served with distinction during the Civil War, earning the nickname "Hancock the Superb" for his leadership and composure under fire. He played a pivotal role at the Battle of Gettysburg, where he commanded Union forces on Cemetery Ridge during Pickett's Charge.
