Details:
Bateman Lloyd autographed partially printed legal document (DS) issued in Salem County and dated November 30, 1798. Acting as Justice of the Peace, Lloyd directs a county constable to recover a debt and court costs from John Hutchinson on behalf of John Page. The writ further orders that, if sufficient goods and property cannot be found to satisfy the judgment, Hutchinson is to be taken into custody and delivered to the Sheriff of Salem County until the debt and costs are paid. Lloyd has boldly signed "Bateman Lloyd" at the conclusion beside his printed title, "Justice Peace."
The document measures approximately 8.5 x 3.25". Very good condition with expected age toning, original vertical folds, scattered light staining and handling wear, and minor edge wear.
Bateman Lloyd was an American Revolutionary War veteran and prominent early resident of Salem County who later served in local public office, including as a Justice of the Peace. His Revolutionary-era service and subsequent civic career place him among the generation of veterans who continued to participate in local government and the administration of law during the early years of the United States.
