Details:
Large collection of several dozen primarily 19th century political pamphlets, campaign tracts, speeches, government publications, and related printed ephemera, with a small number of later publications. The collection centers on American political history, including the Election of 1856, slavery, the Kansas question, sectional conflict, the Civil War, constitutional issues, party politics, and public policy. Among the publications are campaign pamphlets relating to John C. Frémont, speeches by John C. Breckinridge and John M. Clayton, publications concerning the Kansas controversy and the sectional crisis, Republican campaign literature, government reports, legislative addresses, and numerous political essays, broadsides, and pamphlets issued during the 19th century. Also included are a limited number of publications relating to law, history, and public affairs.
Overall good condition with expected age toning, foxing, handling wear, and scattered edge wear throughout. Many pamphlets retain their original stitched bindings, while others exhibit detached or loose wrappers, creasing, small losses, minor chipping, and occasional tears consistent with age and use. Several later publications remain in their original printed wrappers.
