Details:
Andrew Allen autographed manuscript document signed (ADS), dated April 1773, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. An original colonial-era legal indictment signed "Andrew Allen Atty. Gen." in his capacity as Attorney General of Pennsylvania, three years before the Declaration of Independence.
The document records proceedings before a grand jury concerning Charles McGill of Dublin Township, accused of assaulting John Bird in November 1772. Written in the name of King George III, the indictment alleges that McGill did "beat, wound & cruelly treat" Bird, in violation of the King's peace.
The reverse contains additional court notations, including a list of jurors and the endorsement "True Bill," reflecting the grand jury's finding that sufficient grounds existed to proceed with the charge.
An interesting pre-Revolutionary War legal document signed by a future member of the Continental Congress who ultimately rejected American independence and remained loyal to the British Crown.
Document measures approximately 7.5 x 12.5 inches. Very good condition with original folds, age toning, scattered staining, minor edge wear, and a small area of paper loss. Period court notations appear on the reverse, along with later archival repairs.
Andrew Allen (1740–1825) was an American lawyer, colonial official, and politician who served as Attorney General of Pennsylvania and represented the colony in the Second Continental Congress. Although initially supportive of colonial resistance to British rule, Allen opposed independence and withdrew from Congress in 1776. He subsequently joined the British as a Loyalist, fled to England, and was later declared guilty of treason by the Pennsylvania legislature, which confiscated his American estates.
