Philip Henry Sheridan (1831–1888) was a prominent Union Army general during the American Civil War and one of General Ulysses S. Grant's most trusted commanders. Renowned for his aggressive cavalry tactics, Sheridan achieved important victories during the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864 and played a decisive role in the Battle of Five Forks and the pursuit of Robert E. Lee's army leading to the Confederate surrender at Appomattox in April 1865.
Following the war, Sheridan continued his distinguished military career, ultimately becoming Commanding General of the United States Army. Shortly before his death in 1888, he was promoted to General of the Army.
