Ebenezer Snell (1738–1813) was a Massachusetts Revolutionary War veteran, magistrate, and early settler of Cummington. During the Revolution, Snell answered the Bennington Alarm of 1777, an episode later memorialized by his grandson William Cullen Bryant in "The Old Man's Counsel." The poem recalls an aged Revolutionary veteran recounting his response to the alarm and the patriotic fervor surrounding the struggle for independence. Snell's daughter Sarah married Dr. Peter Bryant, and their son, William Cullen Bryant (1794–1878), became one of the foremost American poets and literary figures of the nineteenth century. Bryant's writings preserved elements of his family's Revolutionary heritage and the rural Massachusetts world in which he was raised.
