Details:

George Putnam dual-signed carte de visite photograph depicting the prominent Unitarian minister standing beside an upholstered chair in a photographer’s studio setting. Putnam has boldly signed the mount beneath the image, “Geo. Putnam,” and has additionally signed the reverse, making this a desirable dual-signed example. The carte de visite measures approximately 2.5 x 4 inches.

A desirable signed portrait of one of the leading intellectual and religious figures associated with the American Transcendentalist movement. Putnam was closely connected with many of the era’s foremost thinkers and writers, and his ministry helped promote the liberal religious and philosophical ideals that shaped mid-nineteenth-century New England. Dual-signed photographs of Putnam are encountered far less frequently than his manuscript material, making this an appealing display piece for collectors of Transcendentalism, American literature, religion, and nineteenth-century history.

Very good condition. The reverse exhibits light toning and handling wear consistent with age.

George Putnam (1807–1878) was a distinguished Unitarian minister, author, and one of the principal figures associated with the American Transcendentalist movement. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School, he served for more than four decades as minister of the First Church in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Putnam was a contemporary and associate of leading Transcendentalists including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Theodore Parker, and Bronson Alcott, and was known for advocating liberal theology, intellectual inquiry, and social reform. Through his preaching, writings, and leadership within the Unitarian Church, he helped advance many of the ideas that defined one of the most influential philosophical and literary movements in American history.
