John Pool (1826–1884) was a North Carolina attorney, politician, prominent Southern Unionist, and United States Senator during Reconstruction. Although initially a Whig and later involved in state politics, Pool became a determined opponent of secession during the Civil War era. He was closely associated with the clandestine Unionist organization commonly known as the "Red Strings" or Heroes of America, a network particularly active in North Carolina that opposed the Confederacy, aided deserters and Union sympathizers, and worked to undermine Confederate authority. Following the war, Pool became a leading Republican during Reconstruction and represented North Carolina in the United States Senate from 1868 to 1873.
