Felix Frankfurter (1882–1965) was an Austrian-born American attorney, legal scholar, and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1939 to 1962. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Frankfurter was one of the most influential constitutional scholars of the 20th century.
Before joining the Supreme Court, Frankfurter was a longtime professor at Harvard Law School and a prominent adviser to President Roosevelt during the development of the New Deal. He was also among the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in 1920.
During his 23 years on the Supreme Court, Frankfurter became known for his philosophy of judicial restraint, emphasizing the importance of allowing elected legislatures considerable latitude in determining public policy. He participated in numerous landmark constitutional decisions, including Brown v. Board of Education (1954), in which the Court unanimously ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.
Frankfurter retired from the Supreme Court in 1962 and was succeeded by Justice Arthur Goldberg.
