Details:
Abijah Hildreth autographed manuscript document (ADS) dated May 2, 1822. Written in the first person, Hildreth identifies himself within the body of the document while quitclaiming land previously conveyed to him, contingent upon payment of a $100 note payable on demand. His name appears prominently within the opening portion of the manuscript.
The document is especially interesting in connection with Hildreth's long life spanning both the American Revolution and the turbulent postwar period. A Revolutionary War veteran who fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill, Hildreth later became involved in Shays' Rebellion as one of the Townsend insurgents associated with Lieutenant Peter Butterfield's group.
Document measures approximately 8 x 5.5". Very good condition with overall age toning, original folds, scattered staining, edge wear, and several small tears and losses along the margins.
Abijah Hildreth (1755–1837) was a Massachusetts Revolutionary War soldier from Townsend who answered the Lexington alarm in April 1775 and subsequently served in Colonel William Prescott's regiment. He fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill and continued in Revolutionary service. More than a decade later, Hildreth became involved in Shays' Rebellion, joining other Townsend insurgents who marched under Lieutenant Peter Butterfield during the unrest over taxation, debt, and the operation of Massachusetts courts. Like many participants in the uprising, Hildreth later returned to civilian life after the rebellion was suppressed.
