Details:
William Howard Taft autographed typed letter (TLS), dated December 28, 1906, on official War Department stationery from Washington, D.C., during his tenure as Secretary of War under President Theodore Roosevelt.
Addressed to John L. Bartlett of Springfield, Massachusetts, the brief letter reads:
"I thank you very much for your good wishes, which I reciprocate."
Personally signed "Wm. H. Taft" in ink beneath the closing, "Sincerely yours."
An attractive example of Taft's autograph from his years in Roosevelt's cabinet, shortly before his election as the 27th President of the United States in 1908.
The letter measures approximately 5.5 x 9 inches. Fine condition with light age toning, minor handling wear, and some fading to the signature.
William Howard Taft (1857–1930) was the 27th President of the United States (1909–1913) and the 10th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court (1921–1930). He remains the only person in American history to have held both offices.
Before becoming president, Taft served as Governor-General of the Philippines and Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt. Following his presidency, he was appointed Chief Justice by President Warren G. Harding in 1921, fulfilling his longtime ambition to serve on the nation's highest court. His remarkable career spanning both the executive and judicial branches makes him one of the most distinctive figures in American political history.
