Details:
James Buchanan autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, written from Wheatland near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, November 18, 1867. Writing in support of a charitable fair, the former President expresses his hope for its success and reflects on the nation's obligation to care for the families of soldiers:
"That Country which neglects to provide for the widows and orphans of brave soldiers who have poured out their blood to save it, is unworthy of such noble defenders."
Buchanan continues by praising the patriotic charitable efforts being made throughout the country and specifically cites the "wonderful enterprise, wealth and liberality of the citizens of Chicago," which he believed would provide an example worthy of imitation elsewhere in the Union. He closes, "Yours very respectfully," and signs "James Buchanan."
Fine condition with expected light age toning and mailing folds.
James Buchanan (1791-1868) served as the 15th President of the United States from 1857 to 1861, immediately preceding Abraham Lincoln. A longtime Pennsylvania statesman, he previously served in both houses of Congress, as Minister to Russia and Great Britain, and as Secretary of State. Written less than a year before his death, this 1867 letter reflects on the continuing obligations toward the widows and orphans of soldiers following the Civil War.
