Details:
Original set of four News-Press credentials issued for the 1968 Democratic National Convention, held August 26–29, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois.
The collection includes four original press passes featuring the official convention emblem, each printed in a different color: black, red, orange, and green. Three passes bear identification number 0395, while the orange pass is numbered 1395. Each features a punched hole at the top and instructions along the bottom reading "Insert This Star End As Directed."
The passes are accompanied by their original illustrated presentation folder, which identifies them as "Electronically Programmed Daily Credentials to the Democratic National Convention." The folder retains its four individual windows for displaying and storing the credentials, with instructions explaining the convention's electronic admission system.
An interesting collection of original press credentials from one of the most turbulent and historically significant political conventions in American history.
Very good condition.
The 1968 Democratic National Convention took place amid widespread opposition to the Vietnam War, growing political unrest, and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy earlier that year. President Lyndon B. Johnson's decision not to seek reelection left the Democratic nomination open, with Vice President Hubert Humphrey ultimately securing the party's nomination.
Outside the convention hall, thousands of antiwar demonstrators clashed with Chicago police in confrontations that attracted national television coverage. The violence and political divisions surrounding the convention became defining images of the tumultuous 1960s.
