Details:
George Sutherland autographed official United States Supreme Court card, dated October 6, 1931, featuring the engraved letterhead "Supreme Court of the United States, Washington, D.C."
Sutherland has personally signed "Geo. Sutherland" in black ink across the center of the card, adding the handwritten date "Oct. 6, 1931." His signature and date are framed by two horizontal pen strokes.
An attractive Supreme Court autograph dating from the early years of the Great Depression, during the presidency of Herbert Hoover and the tenure of Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes.
Sutherland was one of the four conservative Supreme Court justices commonly known as the "Four Horsemen," alongside Pierce Butler, James Clark McReynolds, and Willis Van Devanter. The group became particularly influential during the 1930s for its opposition to major portions of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal legislation, arguing that many federal economic regulations exceeded constitutional limits.
Sutherland was also the author of the majority opinion in Adkins v. Children's Hospital (1923), which struck down a minimum wage law for women in Washington, D.C., and the landmark opinion in United States v. Curtiss-Wright Export Corp. (1936), concerning presidential authority in foreign affairs.
The card measures approximately 4.5 x 3.5 inches. Fine condition.
