Details:
The Warren Court full nine-member Supreme Court autographed First Day Cover honoring former Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, postmarked Washington, D.C., March 8, 1968. The cover is autographed by Chief Justice Earl Warren and all eight Associate Justices then serving on the United States Supreme Court: Hugo L. Black, William O. Douglas, John M. Harlan II, William J. Brennan Jr., Potter Stewart, Byron R. White, Abe Fortas, and Thurgood Marshall.
The signatures appear across the face of the cover in blue and black ink. This exact nine-member composition of the Warren Court existed following Thurgood Marshall's accession to the Court in October 1967. Marshall was the first African American to serve as a Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
The cacheted First Day Cover was issued for the 15-cent Oliver Wendell Holmes stamp in the Prominent Americans series and bears the Washington, D.C., March 8, 1968 First Day of Issue cancellation. Holmes himself served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1902 until 1932.
Fine condition. Exhibits slight brushing of ink to Warren's first name.
The Warren Court was led by Chief Justice Earl Warren (1891–1974), who served as Chief Justice of the United States from 1953 to 1969. During Warren's tenure, the Supreme Court issued a number of consequential decisions concerning constitutional rights and the relationship between citizens and government. The nine Justices represented on this cover—Warren, Black, Douglas, Harlan, Brennan, Stewart, White, Fortas, and Marshall—constituted the full Court during the 1967–1968 term.
