Sherman Minton (1890–1965) was an American attorney, politician, and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1949 to 1956. Appointed by President Harry S. Truman, Minton previously represented Indiana in the United States Senate from 1935 to 1941 and subsequently served as a federal appellate judge.
A prominent supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, Minton served in the Senate during a particularly contentious period in American political history. He was a close political ally and personal friend of Harry Truman, who nominated him to the Supreme Court in 1949.
During his tenure on the Supreme Court, Minton participated in significant constitutional decisions involving civil rights, criminal procedure, and federal authority. He was among the nine justices who unanimously decided Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the landmark ruling declaring racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
Minton retired from the Supreme Court in 1956 due to declining health and was succeeded by Justice William J. Brennan Jr. He remains the last former United States Senator to have been appointed to the Supreme Court.
