Details:
Robert Underwood Johnson autographed typed letter (TLS), dated September 14, 1910, on official letterhead of the Editorial Department of The Century Magazine, Union Square, New York. Addressed to Jefferson Winter, son of American dramatic critic and author William Winter, the letter discusses the publication of a forthcoming series of articles by his father, including an article concerning Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Johnson writes, in part: "We thank you for your interesting letter of the 10th of September and are glad to know that your father is already at work on 'Hamlet,' and that the other articles will take precedence of anything else which he has in mind. We wish to begin the group of articles either in the January or the February number as the preparation of the illustrated material will admit."
Johnson further expresses his hope that another series of articles might be published in a periodical that would not directly compete with The Century, while acknowledging the author's freedom to make his own arrangements. Signed "R. U. Johnson" at the conclusion.
An interesting piece of literary correspondence documenting the editorial relationship between The Century Magazine and William Winter, one of America's leading theatrical critics of the period.
The letter measures approximately 8 x 10.25 inches. Fine condition with original mailing folds, light age toning, and minor handling wear. Two original filing holes along the upper edge.
