Daniel D. Tompkins (1774-1825) was an American statesman who served as the fourth Governor of New York from 1807 to 1817 and as the sixth Vice President of the United States under President James Monroe from 1817 to 1825. During the War of 1812, Tompkins played a leading role in organizing and financing New York's militia, often advancing his own funds to support the war effort. His contributions to the nation's defense and his long public service made him one of the most prominent political figures of the early republic.
