Details:
Philip Barton Key autographed handwritten letter signed (ALS), penned in Georgetown and dated April 23, 1804. The approximately 8 x 11 inch manuscript concerns a substantial financial transaction involving General Forrest's land, directing the application of $9,000 toward a note at the Bank of Columbia while outlining the terms under which the remaining funds were to be paid. Key further discusses a conveyance of land and specifies that the transfer should be made without deductions or competing claims, making this an excellent example of an early nineteenth-century legal and financial manuscript.
Written during the Jefferson administration, the letter reflects Key's work as a prominent Maryland attorney and public official during the formative years of the young American republic.
Very good condition overall with expected age toning, scattered foxing, and light handling wear.
Philip Barton Key (1757-1815) was an American lawyer, Revolutionary War officer, and politician who served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland from 1807 to 1813. A respected attorney and landowner, he was also the uncle of Francis Scott Key, author of *The Star-Spangled Banner*. His surviving manuscripts are prized by collectors for their association with the early political, legal, and financial history of the United States.
