Thomas Corcoran autographed manuscript document fragment dated 1813, removed from a larger legal or financial document. Corcoran's bold autograph, "Thos. Corcoran," appears prominently on the fragment alongside the names and signatures of several other individuals, including Daniel Reintzel and George Watterston. Additional manuscript accounting and docketing appears on the verso, including an entry dated June 12, 1813.
The document measures approximately 6 x 3.5". Good to fine condition with expected age toning, irregular edges and paper loss from removal from the original document, and light handling wear.
Thomas Corcoran (1754-1830) was an Irish-born American merchant, banker, civic leader, and longtime public official in Georgetown, District of Columbia. After settling in Georgetown in the late 1780s, he prospered first in the leather trade and later in banking and real estate, becoming one of the community's leading citizens. Corcoran served numerous terms on the Georgetown Common Council and five terms as Mayor of Georgetown, including 1805-1806, 1808-1811, 1812-1813, and 1818-1819. President Thomas Jefferson appointed him to the Levy Court of the District of Columbia in 1801, and Corcoran also served for many years as Georgetown's postmaster and as a magistrate. He was the father of Thomas Corcoran Jr. and grandfather of noted Washington banker, philanthropist, and art patron William Wilson Corcoran.
