Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau (1725–1807) was a French general whose military leadership proved instrumental in securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. In 1780, he arrived in America commanding approximately 5,500 French troops sent to support George Washington and the Continental Army. Rochambeau and Washington coordinated the celebrated 1781 campaign that moved their combined French and American forces south to Virginia, where they trapped Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. Supported by the French fleet under Admiral de Grasse, the allied armies besieged Yorktown and forced Cornwallis's surrender on October 19, 1781, effectively bringing major combat operations of the American Revolution to an end. Rochambeau remains one of the most important foreign military figures of the American Revolution and a central figure in the Franco-American alliance that made victory at Yorktown possible.
