A George III Mahogany Linen Press England, mid-18th century, Attributable to Thomas Chippendale The dentil molded cornice above a pair of paneled doors enclosing sliding shelves, the lower section with four short drawers and one long drawer, on bracket feet, ht. 80 1/4, wd. 53, dp. 19 1/2 in. Footnotes: Provenance Christie's London, 9 March 2000, Lot 52; Acquired by the current owner from the above. Note Aspects of the cabinet-work on the above linen press parralel those found on Chippendale's furniture at Dumfries House, Ayrshire, such as the red wash, which is visible to the underside and back, and the laminated blocking of the bracket feet (see Christie's proposed contents sale of Dumfries House, 12-13 July 2007, p. 10 figs 12 and 13 and lots 40 and 236). It is significant that the red wash appears on many of the pieces at Dumfries House supplied by Chippendale, and not on those pieces known to have been sourced from other cabinet-makers.
