A Paris Porcelain Two-handled Cup, Cover and Socketed Saucer, Possibly Chevalier Brothers' Factory, late 18th century Of bucket shape, the trembleuse stand with a deep well, charmingly painted with two donkeys, a cow, a sleeping dog, and two rustics within continuous rural landscape, the cover and stand also with continuous landscapes, within gilded borders, together ht. 5 1/4, stand dia. 5 3/4 in. CH marks in gilding Footnotes: Provenance Bonhams, location, 20 November 2002, lot #296; Acquired by the current owner from the above. The CH mark has been attributed to two different Paris makers in the literature. It is known to have been used by Henri Florentin Chanou who first worked for the Sèvres manufactory, then tried to run his own manufactory in Paris on the Rue de Reuilly between 1784 and 1785; see R. de Plinval de Guillebon, Paris Porcelain 1770-1850, 1972, pp. 218f. The author illustrates a cup and saucer from the British Museum with a CH mark (see fig. 115) which is part of a déjeuner subsequently, however, attributed to the Chevalier Brothers' factory (rue de la Pépinière) by Aileen Dawson; see A. Dawson, A catalogue of French Porcelain in the British Museum, 1994, pp.382-385. While the cup and saucer, sugar bowl, teapot and jug are all marked CH in gilding, the matching tray has the mark 'chevalier au paris', making Dawson's attribution to the Chevalier Brothers' factory far more likely, and suggests the present lot may have been made by the brothers as well.
