A *German WWII DLV National Air Organization Glider Pilot Dagger in good condition. The German DLV (Deutscher Luftsportverband) Glider Pilot Dagger traces its origins to 1934, when it was introduced under the leadership of World War I flying ace Bruno Loerzer. Established in 1933, the DLV, or German Air Sports Association, officially promoted civilian aviation and glider training but secretly helped prepare pilots for Nazi Germany’s emerging Luftwaffe in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. The dagger was a ceremonial uniform weapon rather than a combat knife, symbolizing the wearer’s association with Germany’s rapidly expanding aviation program. Distinguished by its blue leather-covered grip and scabbard, silver-colored fittings, and prominent swastika emblems, the dagger reflected the distinctive styling of early German aviation organizations. DLV daggers were produced for a relatively brief period beginning in 1934, with transitional examples appearing as the Luftwaffe introduced its own daggers in 1935. In 1937, the DLV was replaced by the National Socialist Flyers Corps (NSFK). Today, surviving examples are collected as historical artifacts representing Germany’s prewar military aviation development and the early years of Nazi rearmament.
