Dated 4 November 1929, this remarkable signed letter from Vittorio Jano to Alfa Romeo dealer Ing. Crepaldi offers a rare contemporary insight into the debate surrounding the organisation of Italian motor racing at one of its most pivotal moments.
Written just two weeks before the foundation of Scuderia Ferrari on 16 November 1929, it captures the views of Alfa Romeo's chief engineer at the very moment the future structure of Grand Prix racing in Italy was being reconsidered. Addressing an article written by Crepaldi concerning the Reale Automobile Club d'Italia (R.A.C.I.), Jano congratulates him on the logical presentation of his arguments before revealing that he has already discussed the matter with Prospero Gianferrari, then Managing Director of Alfa Romeo.
The letter centres upon the proposal to establish a new racing team (scuderia), a subject that would assume profound historical significance within days. Jano expresses both interest and caution. Reflecting upon previous experience, he remarks that racing teams had often created "more annoyance than benefit", while stating his belief that Alfa Romeo itself was unlikely to take such an initiative. Nevertheless, he encourages Crepaldi's efforts, expressing the hope that whichever manufacturer eventually embraced the idea would do so successfully. Read with the benefit of hindsight, the correspondence provides an extraordinary snapshot of opinion inside Alfa Romeo immediately before Enzo Ferrari founded the independent organisation that would become Scuderia Ferrari.
Letters of substantive content by Vittorio Jano are exceptionally scarce. Unlike routine correspondence, this example discusses contemporary racing policy and Alfa Romeo's internal position at a defining moment in Italian motorsport history. Mentioning both Prospero Gianferrari and the proposed formation of a racing team only days before the establishment of Scuderia Ferrari, it represents an important documentary witness to one of the most significant turning points in the history of Ferrari and Grand Prix racing.
