An important archive of original documents relating to Auto Avio Costruzioni, Enzo Ferrari's wartime company, dating from 1943, during the year in which Ferrari relocated his business from Modena to Maranello following the ongoing bombing of the town.
The archive comprises five original documents and one card tax folder, all bearing the Auto Avio Costruzioni name or directly relating to Enzo Ferrari's business affairs during one of the least documented periods of Ferrari's history. Collectively, they provide a fascinating insight into the administrative and financial operation of the company prior to the establishment of Ferrari as an independent automobile manufacturer.
Included are:
- Original "Cartella Tasse – Auto-Avio-Costruzioni" tax folder bearing the purple Auto-Avio-Costruzioni – Enzo Ferrari – Modena stamp.
- Original 1943 Municipal Tax Payment Record (Cartella dei Pagamenti) issued by the Municipal Tax Office of Maranello for the 1943 tax year, addressed to Ferrari Comm. Enzo fu Alfredo ("Enzo Ferrari, son of Alfredo"), recording various land, property and agricultural taxes.
- Original 1943 Municipal Tax Assessment issued by the Municipality of Modena, similarly recording Ferrari's taxation for the year.
- Original typed itinerary and report addressed to Comm. Enzo Ferrari, dated 14 January 1943, summarising meetings and negotiations concerning tax assessments and commercial matters.
- Original handwritten internal company memorandum on Comunicazione Interna stationery.
- Additional contemporary tax documentation.
The typed report provides a particularly interesting glimpse into Ferrari's business administration. Addressed to Comm. Enzo Ferrari, it records discussions with tax officials regarding assessments on his personal and industrial property, negotiations over valuations, reimbursement matters, insurance claims arising from the 5 June 1943 fire, electricity supply contracts for the Maranello factory, and various commercial discussions with suppliers and officials. The report demonstrates the breadth of Ferrari's personal involvement in the company's day-to-day financial management during the difficult wartime years.
The accompanying handwritten internal memorandum, written by Enzo Ferrari in his purple ink on official Auto Avio Costruzioni "Comunicazione Interna" stationery, concern internal financial administration and credit management, illustrating the routine commercial correspondence circulating within the company.
The archive also preserves the original taxation paperwork for 1943. The Municipal Tax Payment Record lists assessments under categories including:
- Land taxes (Terreni)
- Building taxes (Fabbricati)
- Movable wealth tax (Ricchezza Mobile)
- Agricultural income (Redditi Agrari)
- Ordinary property tax (Imposta ordinaria patrimoniale)
- Unified municipal taxes (Imposte Comunali)
The accompanying pink Cartella Tasse folder remains stamped Auto-Avio-Costruzioni – Enzo Ferrari – Modena, an evocative survival from Ferrari's wartime offices. Dating from a pivotal period in Ferrari history, before the first Ferrari-badged automobile had been conceived, this archive offers an unusually intimate record of the administrative, financial and commercial realities faced by Enzo Ferrari during the final years of the Second World War.
Museum quality.
