Kakuho Netsuke Wood Carving Small Statue 'Cat Lying on Bowl, Fish in Bowl' with Small Leather Pouch

Museum reference: A closely related example of this distinctive netsuke is held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Met records the work under the title “Netsuke of Cat Lying on a Bowl, underneath which is a Fish.” It is catalogued as a Japanese work from the 19th century, Edo period (1615–1868) or Meiji period (1868–1912), carved from wood, and measuring approximately 3.8 cm (1 1/2 in.) in both height and width. The museum example bears the accession number 10.211.2034 and was donated to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1910 by Mrs. Russell Sage. According to the museum’s current collection record, the work is presently not on view. The present netsuke features the same highly unusual and charming composition of a cat resting upon a bowl, with a carved fish concealed underneath, making it an especially interesting comparison with the example preserved in The Met’s collection.
