Description
This U.S. M1 helmet is identified by the laundry number “C-4852” and the name “Jim” marked with the helmet. Research into soldiers with this laundry number found three possible “James/Jim” matches, but the other two were either stateside or Pacific Theater service. James D. Cordova was the only match tied to the European Theater, where this helmet was recovered | Cordova served with the 36th Infantry Division in Europe. Collector research connects him to Company E, 143rd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division. He joined the division in June 1944 and took part in the Southern France campaign, including the landings during Operation Dragoon, and later fighting connected to the Colmar Pocket. He was wounded in August of 1944 | The shell and liner have remained together. The helmet appears to have originally carried Military Police markings, including an MP marking and rear ETO stripe, but those markings were scratched or removed. Since Cordova was an infantryman, the likely explanation is that he acquired and used an already-marked MP helmet during the campaign | The helmet was recovered in France and later acquired from a French collector.*Sourced from a reputable and trustworthy private collection*
