Description
S#: NSN | 40” Octagonal Barrel | Approx. .36 Caliber. The bore is possibly rifled and measures 9.2mm (.371 inches) | Antique American percussion long rifle featuring a heavy octagonal barrel signed “J. Chapman.” Engraved percussion lock marked “H. LEMAN / LANCASTER PA.” Henry Leman operated one of the most prolific 19th-century rifle-making establishments in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Features a full-length highly figured tiger/curly maple stock, double-set triggers, brass trigger guard with finger spur, brass buttplate, brass ramrod pipes and muzzle/fore-end cap, wooden ramrod, and fixed sights with brass-inlaid rear sight. Attractive period long-rifle architecture with particularly strong figure extending through the buttstock and forearm. The combination of the J. Chapman-signed barrel and Leman-marked lock suggests a period-built rifle incorporating components from established gunmaking sources rather than conclusively identifying the complete rifle as a factory Henry Leman product. Likely mid-19th century |||| CONDITION: Good. Attractive wood stock with nice grain and solid construction. Metal retains a darkened aged patina with faded markings. Includes full-length wooden ramrod. Does not currently mechanically function properly. Hammer and set trigger do not independently hold in the cocked position. Hammer will remain cocked only while the set trigger is manually held back and releases when the set trigger is released ||||| CLASS: BLACKPOWDER
