This is a substantial period precision/target rifle exhibiting the specialized features associated with American heavy target or bench rifles of the early-to-mid 19th century. The combination of the exceptionally heavy octagonal barrel, fine sighting equipment and double-set trigger system was intended to provide considerably greater precision than a conventional sporting muzzleloader. Maker is presently unidentified. There is a faint marking on the lockplate but may just be engraving design. Similar surviving American target rifles are sometimes described as heavy target, bench, match, or sharpshooter rifles depending upon their exact configuration and provenance |||| CONDITION: Good. Barrel and other iron components exhibit an attractive dark brown aged patina with scattered oxidation, surface pitting and handling wear. Walnut stock retains a dark aged finish with scattered scratches, dents, impressions and handling marks consistent with age; scattered small impact marks are present around the buttstock. There is a hairline crack along the upper edge of stock near the barrel. Brass furniture has developed an even aged patina. Decorative brass patchbox appears complete and intact. Large tang-mounted aperture sight and dovetailed front sight remain present. Striped wooden ramrod is present. Double-set triggers and percussion lock appear externally complete. Mechanically functions. Hammer holds securely at one cocked position and releases with trigger pull. Bore does show some rust but looks like it could clean up well ||||| CLASS: BLACKPOWDER
