Description
This U.S. M1 helmet shell belonged to Private First Class Kenneth J. Dagman, a member of the 28th Military Police Platoon, 28th Infantry Division. The helmet retains large white “MP” markings and the division’s distinctive red keystone insignia. Dagman’s name is also written inside the helmet. It was recovered in Luxembourg near the area where Dagman was captured during the Battle of the Bulge | Dagman, Army Serial Number 39327565, entered the Army from Oregon in February 1943 and served with the 28th Military Police Platoon. During the German Ardennes Offensive in December 1944, the 28th Infantry Division was struck heavily in Luxembourg. Dagman was reported missing in action on December 22, 1944, during the Battle of the Ardennes. He had been captured by German forces in the vicinity of Wiltz, Luxembourg, and became a prisoner of war. | Dagman was ultimately held at Stalag XII-A near Limburg, Germany. He never returned from captivity. Official War Department records later established that he died as a German prisoner of war on March 27, 1945, with his cause of death recorded as malnutrition. A postwar report compiled from information supplied by an American medical officer who had also been imprisoned at Stalag XII-A specifically lists Dagman among the prisoners who died there, recording his death on March 27. His remains were believed to have been buried in the prisoner-of-war cemetery at Diez, Germany. | The 28th Military Police Platoon’s wartime casualty records list Dagman among the platoon’s 26 enlisted men reported missing during the Battle of the Ardennes. He was the only member of the 28th Infantry Division’s Military Police documented as having died during World War II. *Sourced from a reputable and trustworthy private collection*
