Description
S#: NSN | 39" Octagonal Barrel | Approx. .42 Caliber. Evidence of worn or faint rifling in bore that measures 10.7mm (.416") | Fine antique mid-19th-century Pennsylvania percussion long rifle featuring a long heavy octagonal barrel and attractive full-length stock with pronounced curly/figured grain through the butt. Fitted with a commercially produced percussion lock marked “WHITMORE & WOLFF / PITTSBURGH,” with decorative engraving and game-bird scene. Features double-set triggers, fixed front and rear sights, long iron finger-spur trigger guard, brass sideplate, crescent buttplate, brass nosecap and wooden ramrod. Whitmore & Wolff was a prominent Pittsburgh hardware and gun-parts concern associated with Michael Whitmore and Christian H. Wolff, documented during the percussion era as dealers in rifle barrels, gun locks and other gun trimmings. Their marked locks are found on period Pennsylvania rifles and identify the supplier of the lock rather than necessarily the maker of the complete rifle. Barrel is unmarked |||| CONDITION: Fair. Darkened antique metal patina with pitting near the breech. Good wood stock. Includes ramrod. Overall suitable as a wall hanger. Does not currently mechanically function. Hammer has good spring tension but will not remain cocked. Trigger mechanism requires attention ||||| CLASS: BLACKPOWDER
