Description
This traditional samurai dagger (tanto) features an antique blade dating to the 19th century (Shinshinto or "New-New Sword" period). While it lacks a signed maker's name on the handle (mumei / unsigned), the 12-inch blade is notably wide and thick, featuring a rare and dramatic dynamic shape called "cormorant's neck" construction (unokubi-zukuri) where the upper spine is sharply thinned down. The steel displays a highly visible, wavy heat-tempered edge pattern (prominent gunome hamon). The dagger is housed in matching, late feudal-era fittings (Edo period mounts), complete with a wrapped grip (traditional tsuka), a beautiful iron handguard (tsuba), and a black glossy wooden scabbard (lacquered saya). Aside from minor surface scratches, both the blade and its exterior parts are in very good condition |||| MEASUREMENTS: Scabbard Length: Approx. 14.5 in. | Blade Length (Nagasa - guard to tip): Approx. 12 in. | Total Blade Length (Tip to tang heel): Approx. 16.5 in.*Sourced from a reputable and trustworthy private collection*
