Description
This helmet liner is identified to PFC Floyd Sims by the inscription inside the liner, which includes Sims’s last name and full Army serial number, 34920975. The inscription was difficult to photograph, but the serial number provides the key identification, matching Sims’s wartime service records. The steel shell was paired with the liner later and is not original to it, though it is a WWII-era example.| Floyd Sims was born in Tennessee in 1919 and lived in Franklin County, Tennessee, prior to the war. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 15, 1943, at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Sims served as an infantryman with the 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, during the final months of World War II in Europe. | Medical records show that Sims was wounded in February 1945 by artillery shell fragments, sustaining lacerated wounds to his fingers. He was treated and returned to duty. In March 1945, he was wounded again in combat, this time suffering a perforating gunshot wound to the thorax. He died of his wounds on March 3, 1945, before reaching a medical installation. | Sims was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is buried at Luxembourg American Cemetery, Plot H, Row 8, Grave 7.*Sourced from a reputable and trustworthy private collection*
