Description
S#: NSN | 26.5" Barrels | Mfg. Date: Mid-19th Century (Approx. 1850s–1870s) | Caliber: .40 Cal. Rifle / 12 GA. Shotgun | Antique American-made over/under percussion combination gun, commonly referred to as a Cape Gun, attributed to Walter and Charles Ogden of Owego, New York. The Ogden family was active in gunsmithing throughout much of the 19th century, with Walter and Charles operating under the W&C Ogden name following their older brother Jehial Ogden. Features a rifled upper barrel and smoothbore lower shotgun barrel, allowing two different types of ammunition in a single firearm, dual percussion hammers and triggers, fixed sights, figured half-stock, brass finger-spur trigger guard, only 1 wooden ramrod, engraved crescent buttplate, decorative patchbox and metal stock inlays including a five-point star. The barrel is associated with Peter Lorey of Lockport, New York, a mid-19th-century barrel maker. Lorey's involvement is consistent with the period practice of gunsmiths sourcing specialized barrel blanks from independent barrel makers, although the exact extent of his work on this firearm has not been established. The W&C Ogden marking and "Cast-Steel" designation reflect the maker's identity and the period's emphasis on steel barrel construction. An unusual example of American percussion-era combination-gun craftsmanship, combining rifle and shotgun barrels in an over/under configuration |||| CONDITION: Very Good. Attractive darkened metal patina with visible twist-pattern barrels and decorative engraving. Wood stock is good and solid. Missing one ramrod on the left side. Right percussion nipple is slightly bent | Does not currently fully mechanically function. Left hammer operates at full cock. Right hammer has tension and will cock, but does not hold ||||| CLASS: BLACKPOWDER
