Description
This U.S. M1 helmet was worn by Private Thomas L. Shaw of the 349th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, during the Italian Campaign of World War II | Thomas L. Shaw was from Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He entered military service in February 1943 and was assigned to the 88th Infantry Division, known as the “Blue Devils,” the first all-draftee division activated by the U.S. Army during the war. By 1944, the division was heavily engaged in central Italy, advancing north against entrenched German forces in mountainous terrain marked by artillery fire, counterattacks, and sustained casualties | While serving with the 349th Infantry Regiment, Shaw was wounded in combat on October 7, 1944, during operations near Florence, Italy. Despite medical treatment, he succumbed to his wounds on October 11, 1944, at the age of 35. His death was officially recorded as died of wounds, and he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Shaw is buried at the Florence American Cemetery, where thousands of American soldiers who fell during the Italian Campaign are interred | This helmet was recovered decades after the war in Florence itself. In approximately 1995, an Italian collector discovered the helmet at the historic San Lorenzo flea market, stored in a wooden chest alongside a U.S. military canteen. Its presence in Florence is especially significant, as it is the same city in which Pvt. Shaw is buried, suggesting the helmet never left the area after the war.*Sourced from a reputable and trustworthy private collection*
