A THANGKA OF SHRI DEVI MAGZOR GYALMO TIBET, 18TH/19TH CENTURY Distemper on cloth; mounted with silks. Himalayan Art Resources item no. 207020 Image: 63 x 42 cm (24 3/4 x 16 1/2 in.) With silks: 126 x 72 cm (49 5/8 x 28 3/8 in.) Footnotes: 西藏 十八/十九世紀 吉祥天母唐卡 Provenance Private Collection, Singapore, 2015 John and Karina Stewart Collection Magzor Gyalmo commands the centre of the composition, seated within a greyish‑black mandorla edged in burnished gold. Above her, the upper register presents White Tara, Tsongkhapa, and Green Tara, while directly below appear her four seasonal retinue figures: the Queens of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Makaramukha, with a water‑monster visage, leads her mule; Simhamukha, lion‑faced and distinct from the homonymous meditational deity, follows behind. At the bottom centre, the mountain goddess Tseringma, with a youthful white complexion, rides a white snow lion, surrounded by her four sisters. She raises a golden vajra sceptre in her right hand and holds a golden vase to her heart in the left; each sister carries her own attributes and rides a different mount. The composition unfolds against a softly rendered landscape of sky and mountains. The subdued, receding backdrop allows the vividly coloured figures to emerge with striking clarity, creating a harmonious balance between the sacred figures and their natural setting.
