A SILVER AND COPPER INLAID COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF A LAMA TIBET, 16TH CENTURY Himalayan Art Resources item no. 207029 10.8 cm (4 1/4 in.) high Footnotes: 西藏 十六世紀 錯銀錯紅銅喇嘛銅像 Provenance John and Karina Stewart Collection, since 2014 This finely cast figure portrays a Tibetan lama seated in dhyanasana (the posture of meditation). His left hand holds a sutra, while his right hand is raised in vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching and intellectual discourse. He wears monastic robes with brocade‑edged hems and foliate patterning. The face is distinguished by a serene and contemplative expression, enhanced by delicate inlay work. The eyes are inlaid with silver, while copper has been used for the corners of the eyes and the lips. These subtle chromatic accents lend the visage a remarkably lifelike and gentle presence. The robes are further enriched with copper inlay, adding visual depth to the overall composition. For a comparable example of similar size and featuring related inlay work to the eyes and robes, see a lama figure sold at Bonhams, Hong Kong, 3 October 2017, lot 7.
