A GILT POLYCHROMED WOOD SUTRA COVER TIBET, 14TH CENTURY Himalayan Art Resources item no. 207045 24 x 71.5 x 3.5 cm (9 1/2 x 28 1/8 x 1 3/8 in.) Footnotes: 西藏 十四世紀 木質金彩護經板 Provenance John and Karina Stewart Collection, since 1995 This finely carved sutra cover features Prajnaparamita, the four-armed personification of Transcendent Wisdom, holding a vajra and a sutra at the centre of the composition. Branching symmetrically from her throne, thick, undulating foliate vines form graceful loops enclosing two identical groups of the Five Presiding Buddhas. The sacred figures are seamlessly integrated into an interconnected network of gilded scrollwork. The border comprises an inner band of beaded pearls and an outer band of lotus petals, creating deep, inward-pointing grooves in relief. The foliate vines closely parallel those on a related sutra cover published on HAR (21948), while a comparable composition can be seen on another example, also published on HAR (20151).
